Nothing will make your mom more than your putting effort in making handmade mother’s day gift.Few things are as able to communicate your love and gratitude as effectively as a homemade gift. If you have young and perhaps ‘not quite so young’ children, now is the perfect holiday to get creative.
If you are wondering what to make, look no further because we have some advice and it starts with fleece fabric. Fleece? Yes, that’s right: fleece. It’s easy to work with, durable and, best of all, doesn’t fray. That means that you can use it in a variety of craft projects and don’t have to worry about the seams. Best of all, all of the variety out there, you’ll be sure to find a pattern that will suit your needs. The following five suggestions are not just easy to make, they are all attractive gifts that any mother would be pleased to call her own.
One of the easiest gifts to make with fleece is a pillow. All you need to do is cut out two matched shapes, the size that you want for the pillow. It can be a square, rectangle or even a circle. The trick of the no-fleece pillow is to make small scissor cuts around the perimeter of the fabric, as though you are making fringe. These should occur evenly, about every inch and should be about 2 inches deep. You need to make the exact same number of cuts on both pieces and they will need to match up as exactly as possible. Then place a pillow in between both pieces of fleece and tie each bottom piece of fringe to a corresponding piece of top fringe. If you are working with your children, you’ll want to help them tie a double-knot. And that’s it. You’ve made a pillow.
If you want to get even ‘extra-creative,’ consider adding a design to the front of the pillow. Take a cook at some of the templates online and choose something appropriate. One idea is a bright flower or a simple red heart. Just buy a small amount of extra fleece and cut it into the shape that you desire. Then hot glue it to the front. Voila! You have a pillow.
Nothing could be easier or more fun that fleece made placemats. Choose a plain color for the mat and then add a design to the top. Again, look around the internet and find the shapes or designs that you want. For young children, you might want to cut out the shapes in advance. For older children, they can do most of this themselves. Then, with some adult supervision, get out the glue gun and complete the project. Remember, the edges to your mat can be whatever you desire, because fleeces won’t unravel. So if a scalloped edge will make the mat look even prettier, scallop away!
If you haven’t seen a cup cozy yet, don’t worry, you will! In the crafting world, cup cozies are all the rage. With a bit of fleece, however, a cozy can be an easy process that includes just cutting the fabric out and tying. Make sure that the fabric will fit around circumference of the cup. It must be about ¼ of an inch from both the top and bottom of the cup, so measure carefully. Then make three fringe cuts (about 1-2 inches deep) on the edges of the fabric that are designed to meet. Then tie them at the ‘back’ of the cup, both above and below the handle. For a really fabulous gift, make a larger cozy for a french press include it with four matching (and cozied) cups. That way the gift will be a complete (and lovely) package.
Scrapbook Cover/Photo Album
What mother wouldn’t love a scrapbook or a photo album? You could fill those first few pages with pictures of the kids and their accomplishments. Or, if the kids are a bit older, how about including some of their best artwork or a series of poems? On the cover, simply match the fleece to the size of the cover, cut it out and glue. You can add any design you wish. Some ambitious crafters have cut out the letters to ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ with contrasting pieces of fleece and attached this to the cover. However you decide to personalize your gift, it’s something that anyone (particularly a Mother) would be proud to display on her coffee table. This is one of best handmade Mother’s day Gift Ideas that I would recommend.
One last quick idea for a special gift is a pencil container. Simply find an old tin can, rinse it out and make sure that there are no sharp edges left on the inside. Then simple cut out a piece of fleece and cover that old can: it’s that simple. Of course, you add any designs you want to the outside. If the mother in question has a recycling heart, this is a gift that will be sure to please! And the kids will be so proud that they could make it ‘all by themselves’!
