Puppetry has long traditions. It is believed to have originated in India and spread to South East Asia where it was used to communicate messages, tell stories and preach morals.
Even thought we now have more technological entertainment for kids in the form of computer games and gadgets, puppets are still loved by kids from all backgrounds.
Puppets are often used for educational purposes. One of the reasons they are adored so much by children is because they are used as characters to interact with them. Children respond very well to lively puppets, even more so than with some real people. Puppets can often be used to narrate stories and teach morals to children.
Another possibility is for children to create puppets themselves to create their own stories and characters. This is a great chance for kids to develop their imagination, creativity and motor skills.
The graphic below displays a simple guide for kids to get started with puppet making. The materials used are taken from the Hope Education’s educational materials.
