No one would think that being a geek is a high risk lifestyle. If anyone was going to point fingers, they’d choose individuals who take dangerous jobs or those who abuse their bodies with drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol. Being a geek seems harmless.
However, research shows that a geek lifestyle could actually be at the risk of major problems down the line. Geeks are physically inactive for long periods of time, leading to many serious, underlying health conditions. Whether they’re staring at a computer for work for long hours, gaming, reading, or doing research, geeks are confined to a sitting position for too long and their bodies are paying the price.
According to the NY Times, sitting is hazardous to one’s health. When a body is in a sitting position, calories burn at a much slower rate as the body’s metabolism drops dramatically. The body stops processing insulin properly as well, increasing the risk of type 2 Diabetes. The enzymes in the body that are responsible for breaking down lipids start limping along as well. High levels of unhealthy cholesterol are a result and healthy cholesterol levels drop. Risk of cancer, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack all increase for the person who chooses a sedentary lifestyle. Obesity is one of the most obvious risk factors. When a body is not in motion, the extra pounds are more likely to add up fast.
While this news is disturbing to those living the geek lifestyle, there are 9 other health problems that geeks may face. Probably every geek has experienced mild headaches or dizziness from staring at their computer screen too long, this is from eye strain. While it’s bothersome it’s easily prevented and not as bothersome as some of the other effects that technology may have on geeks. While Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is no fun at all, it’s a lot better than brain tumors which some studies find linked to cell phone useage. While other studies say the EMF is not bothersome enough to cause tumor, there is still the possiblitiy of men having a low sperm count, poor motility, or deformed sperm. Yet, still some geeks get addicted to their smartphones, obsessively checking messages up to 34 times a day. Insomnia is no picnic either, it can be caused from light from your favorite electronic devices.
The good news is that there are solutions to all these problems. The first step is being aware at how the geek lifestyle may be harming you. Then you can take measures to prevent it and be a happy, healthy geek!
