Creative games can serve as a powerful tool for artists and designers of every kind. While some people still have the twisted idea that artists must suffer to get their inspiration or walk in a dark forest until they meet their personal muse, a more practical and fun filled approach will achieve much better results.
During my long, and some say illustrious career as a jewelry designer, I’ve used dozens of various mind games to boost my creative output.
Let’s take a look at a couple of creative games that will help you to translate your creative energies into better designs.
The Marriage of two Designed Objects
We live in a man-made environment, which means that virtually everything around us is designed. If you really think about it, even the outdoor parks and the roads outside of our house were designed and adjusted to our perceptions and needs.
This means that we live inside an environment which is an encyclopedia of design and which can provide us with an almost limitless number of design inspirations and ideas.
The game I call ‘the marriage of two designed objects’ takes this into the next level by randomly selecting two objects and then combining them into a coherent, organic design.
The principle of this game is simple: you close your eyes and empty your mind of any thought. Open your eyes and let them immediately focus on the first object they fall upon. You can them take a few photos of the object, whether it’s a table, a hair pin or a pencil or better yet, make a few sketches of it. Repeat the same exact process for the second object.
Now comes the tricky part, you need to analyze the design elements that were used in each of the objects and then combine them in order to create something new and original. You will be pleasantly surprised to discover what original results this unique game can give you.
Designing for an Imaginary Movie
This game will only work for you if you have an active sense of imagination. It can do wonders if you want to come up with a complete line of jewelry designs.
We’ve all seen what a wonderful work jewelry designers have done for science fiction and fantasy movies such as the Lord of the Rings. You can invent your own imaginary movie which will include interesting characters to create designs for.
You don’t need your imaginary concepts and stories to be especially literary or sophisticated, remember that the goal here is to create innovative designs. If telling stories is not your strongest talent, you can choose a movie which you like and create a jewelry line for its characters. The options here are almost limitless; you can use gangster movies, fantasy, historical movies and science fiction.
Playing such mind games will not only help you to improve your designs and add a lot of originality to them, it will also motivate you and allow you to enjoy your work.
